The Pamunkey nation are one of eleven Virginia Indian Tribes recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia. The historical tribe was part of the Powhatan paramountcy. Prior to World War II, Powhatans began a community in the Philadelphia-Camden area, maintaining their native identity in part through a close network of families.They frequently intermarried with Nanticokes of Delaware and members of other tribes.
